City Thai - Pasadena Old Town

Went to Kuala Lumpur (Green St.) for lunch - the small room and few tables can not handle a lunch crowd. So we sauntered up to City Thai - corner of Fair Oaks and Green.

Had 2 items from their lunch special - Green Beans in Red Curry with beef; Pad Kee Mow - flat noodles with chicken. These come with a soup and salad and a serving of rice. First we ordered an appetizer - hand rolls. The description said it was thin sheets of rice noodles coddling sprouts, Thai sausage, crab meat, and cucumber. It came topped with shredded omelette, and a sweet brown sauce, but no crab meat. We pointed that out, twice, to no effect!

The soup was the clear soup with chicken, white onions, tofu, and celery. It was somewhat too sweet for me and not as cleanly flavored as the one at Tiparos (Colorado Blvd.). I asked for their prik nam pla (fish sauce with green chilis) which was one of the most tired and disgusting looking that I have had in any Thai restaurant!

The noodle and green bean dishes were OK, without being exceptional. The service was quite poor - the place was empty (in contrast to Kuala Lumpur) - and the reason was evident. It is puzzling how they have managed to stay in a high rent location for so long, serving such mediocre Thai food with poor service. (On a previous occasion at dinner, they served us the wrong dish - that night it was so crowded, and it took so long to get our dishes, we just pointed it out and took what we got instead of waiting for them to rectify the problem)
