Restaurants & Bars

Circa 1926 - Orlando

Went to Circa for the first time last night. I thought the space was very nice, but like a lot of restaurants now a days, was not very busy (7pm on a Friday night, and we were one of 3 tables filled). The bar however had quite a few people at it, so we didn't feel like the only one's there. They also have a back dining area that was completely empty, so if you eat there, I recommend the front dining area.

As for the food, the appetizers were far and away better than the entrees. We shared the mussels in a white wine broth, the crab cakes with remoulade, and the frito misto with a citrus-chili sauce. All three were outstanding. The crab cakes had barely any filler, a nice panko crust, and the remoulade had a little mustard heat. The frito misto was nice and fresh, with shrimp, scallops, calamari, and artichoke. And the mussels were nice and plumb, in a very delicate sauce.

The entrees to be honest were a bit of a let down. I had the grouper over a sween corn risotto. The risotto was a bit tight and clumbsy, and while the fish was nicely cooked, then two just made for a dull dish. Also ordered were the veal medallions wrapped in prosciutto, pan fried, and served with boursin mashed potatoes and asparagus with a mushroom cream sauce. With all of those great sounding individual ingredients, this dish also disappointed in the fact that it was all a bit heavy.

For dessert we split the bread pudding with ice cream which was very nice.

The menu on their website is not up to date, as we were looking forward to trying the crawfish beignets, and the veal chop and duck entrees. Maybe the availability of those entrees would have made for a better experience.

While there was nothing horrible with the meal, there was nothing really that memorable either. And at $250+ including drinks for two people, there are other places in Orlando I'd go to before coming back to Circa.
