From Taos Pueblo https://www.chowhound.com/post/pueblo... , I headed back to my hotel to check-out. But not before investigating the source of the early morning whiff of cacao perfuming my neighborhood. Turned out that an organic bean to bar producer was less than three blocks from my lodging. As a Good Food Award judge for the chocolate category for two years, even more exciting that it turns out to be Chokola, one of our award winners.

The Tasting Trio $7.50, offering three picks from sipping chocolate, mousse, ice cream or bonbon was a great way to sample the wares. I chose Arabian hot (cardamom and coffee), chocolate ice cream, and Venezuelan mousse. That coffee edge saved me from a chocolate coma. The ice cream felt like frozen ganache ... so dense with chocolate solids, it barely melted in the mouth. The mousse was the weakest of the set with a grainy texture and not as deep as I wanted.

If I had more time, I'd try everything on the mousse bar (isn’t that a marvelous concept?) and all six sipping chocolates. I bought bars and the last slice of whiskey torte to take with me.

We had that slice of whisky torte after a homecooked dinner and it was wonderful. Deeply chocolatey with a spiritous kick. The Ecuador 70% bar, was my road trip snack, such nice snap, rich chocolate tones with floral and tropical fruit highlights.

Delighted with this find! I could not be more grateful that I chose an inn located in the historic center or I would not have stumbled across Chokola. Chocolate is said to help mitigate altitude sickness. One more reason to visit Chokola when in Taos.
