I want to take a big chocolate layer cake to a mountain bike gathering/camping trip this weekend.
It must be:
A layer cake
Heat stable (and thus I prefer a ganache frosting)
No fruit (diners will be 90% male)
No white chocolate (I hate it)
Not too gourmet (I'm still getting crap for the Black Pearl Cake)
But not too cutsey or downhome either (no candy bars, no mayonaise cakes)
I usually take Martha Stewart'd Devils' Food w/ Mrs. Milmans Frosting and it's perfect, but you know...variety is the spice of life. I would like for the layers to show up a little better around the campfire! Last year I made the EPI chocolate cake w/ caramel-milk choc frosting and I thought it was icky-sweet, but people liked it.
Recipe links appreciated, or just some ideas on how to tweak basic layer cakes for something a little different. TIA!
