I hope you read this, Pat Hammond. I went to Reading Terminal to find authentic chipped beef. Not at the Lancaster butcher or the Amish market place. But before I gave up, there it was at Alteman's (or was it Halteman's?) next to Iovine veggie market. It's at the deli stand, not the butcher. Make sure they slice it thick. I've already tried it, its not quite as good as the beef I got near Lancaster County but I'm quibbling. It's much better than the chipped beef you get in stores (though Kraus would be a distant second). Also, I found the turkey store and bought turkey Canadian bacon, turkey scrapple, and turkey ham steaks. We don't bring pork into the house, but I really missed scrapple. The turkey scrapple is just as junky and disgusting as the pork scrapple; I loved it!
Finally, I had breakfast at Down Home Diner. The biscuits were good but not transcendent by any means. Then I had an apple dumpling at the Amish eating place. Unbelievable. I kept adding more and more heavy cream. It was great. Too bad the coffee they serve is really mediocre. Next time I will have breakfast there.
Reading Terminal had some great things at reasonable prices, though I found the fish markets pretty disappointing. Nothing looked really fresh.
