Chincon Rilleno (sp?) Review

eepo | Oct 21, 2003 06:49 PM

This past weekend I had lunch at CR for the first time. CR is located on Melrose east of the 101 freeway. The cuisine is Chilean. I had never tried Chilean, although I had have ate at El Cesario on Beverly Blvd just east of Vermont numerous times, and found the cuisine to be comparable.

I ordered empanadas to start, and enjoyed every bite of the empanada. In fact, although my scope is limited, it may have been my favorite empanada I have ever consumed. It at least merits a solid recommendation. The bread that they served with the meal was fanastic. I think it is referred to as flat bread, and tasted like the Chilean version of a "down home southern biscuit". Marvelous. I chose Sangria to accompany the meal, and the Sangria was really just average. I thought it tasted like a bad Prosecco (Italian Sparkling Red- sp?). For my main course I chose the Chorizo con pappas. I have to say I have had far better. The chorizo was accompanied by peas that were bland at best, insipid is probably more accurate. The potatoes were the highlight of the dish - perfectly fried.

If I were to do it again, I would get takeout from the Bakery next door rather than eat at the restaurant. They have the empanadas and flat bread there for sale amongst a plethera of tantelizing baked treats. They also sell quite a few types of Chilean beer!
