Outstanding korean classics, including my favorite "sizzling stoneware" dishes: hot-stone BiBimBop. I believe this tiny institution first achieved chow-fame from it's dry fried chicken (YangNyum TongDakk). Their chicken is indeed tasty and quite fresh (local korean grandmas buy fresh whole raw chickens from them). The chicken breading is really just tempura, which is actually quite delicious when freshly fried to order. It is an ambrosiac compliment to korean beer and sojus (which this restaurant has a small selection of).
Their lunch specials are enormous, and excellently priced for the quality! If you've ever had lunch at Mariposa Cafe in Potrero, you'll appreciate the enormous portions at Shin's. They sure don't stinge with the excellently marinated BBQ meats. Their beef short rib (marinated in house special sauce) is an absolute steal at $6.95 for lunch. Not only is the quality of the short rib outstanding, but it comes with a gorgeous and fresh arrangement of side dishes displayed within the lunch box. The quality of their Unagi bowl was similar, as was their sauteed calimari, and udon. My personal heroin is their lunch special of Bul-go-gi Jab-Chae-Bop (a meaty mix of a lot of my favorites)--only $6.95--unbelievable.
They do noodles well, their Spicy Chewy Noodles (Chool-Myun) is an outrageously satisfying dish to eat and also complements soju extremely well. Their Udons, especially seafood versions are fresh and tasty. I'm overall very impressed with their seafood quality. Everything from calimari bok-um's to mussel gui's. They even serve lovely skate wing and monk fish (quite garlicky, beware).
The service has always been adorable and cheerful (the few times I've been). They are knowledgably quick with the iced water containers which they deliver to your table.
Summary: fresh, good quality ingredients and enormous portions. I really don't know how they stay in business. Worth the trip for take-out, especially lunch. Do NOT be alarmed by the plain bunker-like exterior!
