Chef Vahit Besir to Open Mangal Mediterranean in San Francisco

Melanie Wong | Mar 15, 201808:45 PM

My favorite Turkish chef, Vahit Besir, is back! He's returning to San Francisco to open his own place, Mangal Mediterranean, not far from his earlier restaurant, Eden's Turkish Food.

"Mangal" means grill or barbecue, and the emphasis will be on flame-cooking. The döner kebaps (aka gyro or shwarma) will be cooked on rotating spits. While I can't wait to have his stellar Adana kebap again, what I'm really jazzed about is that by taking over a former pizza place, there's room and equipment for Chef Vahit to be baking Turkish flatbreads and desserts again. I'm so happy to see Lahmacun on his menu.

The opening menu is just a start with selected customer favorites. He expects to have daily specials to supplement and build up the offering over time. I've already asked for grilled lamb hearts, kazandibi, kisir and haydari.

Projected opening date has been April 1. But tonight I was informed that it might be opening sooner than that. If anyone's in the neighborhood, please give us a progress report!

Earlier reports for Chef Vahit:

"Being a fan of chef Vahit Besir is exhausting..."
