All this talk over the past week about Mandarin Kitchen and Chinese food in the Twin Cities made me hungry, and curious about Chan's, the new Chinese restaurant on Nicollet and 25th in Minneapolis. The always full parking lot, and the majority Chinese clientele were a good sign. But not as good a sign as the food itself. Granted I have only been twice since it has opened, but I think this place is head and shoulders above all local Chinese restaurants and on par with some of the best place in NY and SF. The steamed shrimp with a dipping sauce were bursting with flavor -- live 10 minutes before they were at our table. The ginger scallion and clam hot pot was delicious. The sauce with Chinese rice wine brought out the flavors of the other ingredients. Also the two vegetable dishes I have had -- Chinese broccoli and sauteed pea pod shoots -- have been perfectly cooked and not too oily. The prices are a couple bucks higher than other local Chinese restaurants, but it pays back with the quality of the extremely fresh fish, swimming in tanks at the front of the restaurant. They also have a great dim sum menu, with almost 30 very interesting options. I have not tried that yet, but will have to soon.
