New Catalina Bar & Grill

We saw the sign on the sidewalk on the way to Café des Artistes for lunch. It said something like “Catalina”, and open for lunch 11:30-2:30. After wandering around the building, we asked the valet where it was, and he pointed into the central courtyard. In the future, you enter either through the parking lot in the back, or directly off of Sunset.

We walked in, and it was a large open room with black walls and black ceiling. There are a bunch of tables in the center of the room, and a few booths on the side. There is a stage in the front, and a large mixing board right by the front door. There is also a bar up in front, and to the side of the stage.

We were the only ones there, and we were seated in a booth. No one else showed up the entire lunch. The waiter told us it was the first day they were open for lunch.

The menu is quite broad, with salads, pastas, fish, appetizers a burger and other entrees. My friend ordered the Asian Chicken Salad, and I ordered the Beef Stroganoff.

Once we ordered they brought out some nice dark brown bread with herbed butter. The bread was warm, and it went well with the butter.

The meal took a little time to prepare, but when they brought it out, it was clear that it was worth the wait. The salad was tart, and the chicken breast on top was cooked perfectly. There were also pealed baby pink grapefruit wedges and snow peas adorning the plate. It was good to look at, and it tasted delicious.

The Beef Stroganoff was pretty good, too. There were mushrooms, chunks of tender beef, a tasty wine cream sauce and a good portion of angel hair pasta.

The only part that I wasn’t too thrilled with was the drinks. We ordered Arnold Palmers (mixture of iced tea and lemonade), but I think it was made with coffee instead of tea. It tasted weird. Something was wrong with it. Thankfully we also ordered water.

I plan to go back for lunch as it’s near the office. Hopefully they’ll get some people going for lunch so they will stay open during the day. I’d also like to go back some time at night to see the live jazz.
