Carousel Cruise Night

Local | Jul 22, 200403:03 PM

Four of us hit the Glendale Cruise night last Saturday. Big Sandy and His Flyrite of my favorite swing bands, great for a little EC Swing and Lindy, but I do digress. We escaped 57' Chevy's and went headfirst into the mezze selection at Carousel.

Cold mezze. The eggplant "salad" continues to be my first choice. Substle smoky flavor, wonderful spices, a bit sour but definable eggplantiness. Good stuff- true desert island food.

Moving on, double orders of most everything..(we ordered with our eyes and not our stomach quota) - Fattoush, Muttabal (Babaganouj), Hummos, Tourshi plate (the pickled pink turnip is absolutely addictive), Cabbage Salad, also a spicy cheese "salad" (diced feta (?) cheese with herbs, tomatoes, really good (rg)!), a spicy smashed-walnut spread (rg!), Tabbouleh, and Cucumbers in an herbed yogurt sauce. Lotsa warm fresh Pita! Great spice/herb combinations, salty, lemony sour, any "heat" soothed by hummos or more eggplant. All were equally good, if not better, for lunch the next day.

Warm mezze - Hummos Fool (a chicpea "stew" that I didn't expect to like, and loved), and spinach fattayer (nothing special, somewhat bitter and they didn't fare well as leftovers - their pastry turns to a Peeps-like styrofoam product).

We balanced plates on the edges of the table, service was a bit frenetic, but not necessarily bad. A bottle of Armenian white wine...a little over 2 hours later we rolled out onto the Boulevard as the vintagemobiles were firing up their engines!
