Went to O Cantinho in East Cambridge last night for the first time....my girlfriend and I shared:
fava beans with linguica: Excellent, dark garlicky and salty sauce with small bits of linguica and large fava beans. We dipped the bread in the sauce, we will be back for more of this dish! Generous portion was a bargain for 4 dollars!
soup of the day, which was a portuguese vegetable soup: Potatoes, kale, other veggies, dill made a nice soup. It wasn't overly salty, which was nice since other things were quite salty.
A cheese, ham and tomato sandwich: The ham was really more like proscuitto, very tasty, the bun was soft. Came with a (huge) side dish, i chose the black eyed peas, which were in a nice vinegrette. We ate the whole sandwich but there were plenty of leftover beans.
The tuna salad: tuna salad portion was generous, made with parsley, celery, tomato?....served over not-that-interesting bed of mostly iceberg lettuce.
Desserts: a white bean cupcake, which reminded us of something, but we couldn't quite figure out what. Reminded me sort of a cross between chinese red bean paste (which I like) and spaghetti squash (which I don't like). So I half liked the cupcake.
Also had the caramel cake, very nice cake (made with rum, or some other liqour).
Finally, I also drank one of the passion fruit portuguese juices, which was more like a passion fruit version of orangina. I forget the brand right now, but they were in small green bottles and it was quite nice.
Total bill for all of that (which was plenty for 2, including leftovers) was 24 dollars!!! Very friendly service, nice decor. A great neighborhood spot, if I lived in East Cambridge i'd go there probably every week for those fava beans. I am excited to go back!
p.s. O Cantinho is at 1128 Cambridge St. in Cambridge, a bit east of Inman Sq.
