Cake to cupcakes recipe problems

Yesterday, while snowed in, I made the double chocolate layer cake from Epicurious that's been posted here several times. I made cupcakes instead of the cake and while the flavor is fabulous, the texture is a bit "crumbly." It is moist, but once the paper is removed, the cupcakes sort of fall apart. They are cupcakes that need to be eaten with a spoon or fork! I've never had this happen before and am wondering if it's because I made cupcakes instead of the cake. Any ideas? I'd like to make the cake, but not if it crumbles.
