The Aubergine Cafe, on the corner of 50th Street and Skillman Ave. opened last Thursday. The corner store had been a Spanish grocery and the Aubergine owners (a young man with an Irish accent and his wife, I believe)thought a Bangladesh food store was there more recently. Anyway, it is a small but cozy place with very good coffee, cappucino, nice-looking muffins, croissants and other good-looking pastries. They have a small menu of breakfast things (e.g. home-made waffles), and sandwiches and salads for lunch. They are open at dinner time but the menu is unchanged from the lunch one. Nice to have this in Sunnyside, which has been deprived of really good coffee and a place with nice ambiance to just sit in. Hope they draw enough people to make it.
