My last Burger Deluxe at the Thruway Diner...

After a great deal of opposition by locals, it looks like the 53-year-old Thruway Diner in New Rochelle is serving its final meals to make way for a chain drugstore, although the finish may not arrive for a few months yet...So I felt compelled to go the other night for an early supper. Just sitting there with my partner brought back many memories dating back to my childhood...coming up from the Bronx in those days to have breakfast at 2 a.m. with my crowd...having breakfast at 3 in the afternoon if I wanted to sometimes...the original vintage structure of the place...the flashy renovation (which took me a while to absorb at the time)...the many kindnesses of the late Don Zappavigna, who ran the place until 1996...In recent years, I did not visit that often, but the parking lot always appeared full day and night....So, what did I order for what could be one of my last meals there? The Burger Deluxe Platter, of course. It was o.k. My partner had the Bombay Salad...oddly named but good...and we shared a piece of the triple layer Coconut Lemon Cake for dessert. As we were finishing, the place was just filling up as it always had, once again...
