For years, I've done my own Christmas puddings, British steamed sponges and mincemeat from the same Maple Leaf brand shredded suet as my grandmother used.
In the last 2 years every grocery store I knew who used to carry the product around the Holidays don't offer it anymore. I've been told by multiple employees that Maple Leaf increased number of packages per case which made it so the stores were hesitant to order a case by fear of getting stuck with unsold packages. Not sure how true this is but I can't seem to get my hands on shredded beef suet anymore.
Since then, I tried grinding organic raised beef suet myself from friendly butchers but, although it somewhat worked, the livestock taste and texture of the cake was definitely not the same.
Anyone knows where I could score some shredded suet in Montreal? Maple Leaf or Atora, I don't mind but Stirrup Sunday is in a week and my family's Holidays wouldn't be the same with Christmas pudding.
