Breakfast at Jimmy Bean's, Berkeley

Rod Williams | Oct 22, 2005 05:18 PM

The waiting throng outside Bette's Oceanview Diner at 9:30 Saturday morning was way too ridiculous, so we hopped back in the car and drove over to Jimmy Bean's. I remember reading here recently about an unhappy experience there, so I went with diminished expectations. I needn't have -- it was delicious.

We had a good Eggs Benedict, a little skimpy on the Canadian bacon, but otherwise fine, with a good hollandaise and yummy Yukon Gold home fries. On the side were three sauces -- a fresh tomato salsa, cilantro pesto, and chipotle aioli -- all very colorful and tasty, if untraditional. I had the weekend special Omelette #2, with three kinds of mushroom (shiitake, portabella, white button), mozzarella and provolone, also served with the great fries and three sauces -- one of the best omelettes I've had in quite a while. Coffee was fine, but a little weak for my taste.

They've expanded the seating area into the space next door since I was last there, which meant no waiting for a table this morning. The service staff were all cheerful and helpful. Gotta go back and try their dinner menu.
