Hi Wine Folks,
I'm co-hosting a combination birthday dinner Saturday Aug 26, 2017 for 3 celebrants - all of whom enjoy wine but are not well versed in it at all. There will be approx 12 people at the dinner.
The other co-host is providing the food, she's an excellent cook and has created the menu below. I'm to pair and supply the wines.
I have some wine knowledge but the menu seems a bit challenging, and I'm somewhat stumped as to how to marry up so many different flavors with perhaps only a few wines that would appeal and work well with the menu.
And I have at least one diehard red wine drinker who at 79 years old is only satisfied with Malbec, or Cabernet etc.
Baked goat cheese with peppadews and apricot jam - Thinking a sparkling wine/champagne
Crackers & toasts
Steamed asparagus & green beans w/mustard dipping sauce - Sancerre Rose or ?
Cold zucchini soup w/ crème fraiche & cilantro - Verdelho or stick with a Rose?
Charred corn and tomato salad
Grilled Flank steak with bourbon marinade - RED but what - would a Mourvedre or Mourvedre blend work?
Bacon ranch potato salad
Blueberry and Peach galettes with crème fraiche ice cream - likely only a few still drinking wine at this point. Any thoughts?
