Pouring rain last Saturday made go in search of beef noodle soup. Remembering they had one at Spices! I, I braved the wet roads crosstown for it. Got there... ordered a beef noodles soup small size. I also asked them to make it not as spicy ("hsiao la"). The menu billed it as authentic Taiwanese style so I was very much excited. Had a side of the garlic cucumber cold dish as I waited.
What a disappointment. There was a heavy layer of oil on top. It wasn't hot oil either... just tasteless grease. The noodles were firm, but not really anything special. The meat was spent in flavour. And the broth... it was so spicy I could barely swallow it. I can't iamgine what it would be like if I asked for it regularly. I could only manage about 3 bites of this before I asked the waiter to take it away. I ordered a pork chop noodle soup instead (another supposed specialty). It was just okay (incidentally also with a super oily broth)... but the fried pork chop itself had lots of flavour and kinda sweet.
Overall, was felt the outing was not worth it.
So so far I think...
Fortune Garden in UC is the best, followed closely by Queens House MV and Southland Taste in Cupertino, then China Tofu in UC.
Is Shanghai Dumpling House in SF good? Want to find something in SF. How about Tea Garden?
