Hard to believe, but some guy in North Babylon thinks he can serve (from his ad) "Real Southern Style BBQ - Dry Rubbed & Slow Smoked Over Exotic Hardwoods." Here's the address:
TK's Smokehouse & BBQ Pit
aka T K's Cafe
1171 Deer Park Ave,North Babylon,NY 11703
Phone: (631) 667-4322
T K's Cafe is an old school bar restaurant serving up burgers and Italian-American fare. I've never eaten there, nor had a desire to. Seeing this ad in the local paper was a shock akin to finding out the local diner would now be serving sushi. Needless to say, I had to try it as soon as I could.
They haven't forgone their traditional menu, but offer a selection of BBQ specialities including "Owensboro Lamb, Memphis Pork Ribs, Sliced Texas Beef Brisket and Pulled Carolina Pork." I can't speak as to authenticity as I've never had true Southern BBQ, my guess would be this is not quite authentic, but it definitely is an earnest effort.
I had the the ribs which were quite tasty and tender. The dry rub was good, but the sauce was a bit salty, which was ok since they were good enough to eat on their own. My girlfriend had BBQ shrimp, also good but covered in that salty sauce. Many of the side dishes were a bit too salty (esp. mashed potatoes and memphis beans). Corn bread was good and also a Georgia Pecan Sausage rice (curious that most of the menu items start out with a place name).
They're just starting out with this menu, so hopefully there will be some improvements (sauce and saltiness wise). I plan to follow up in a few weeks and will post an update. In the meantime, if anyone goes that has more experience in these matters, please post.
