Just had a blah lunch form BBQ King. Silly me, I had a coupon and an appetite for BBQ. Sonny's would have been preferable, and taht's not saying too much.
I can forgive a lot of nonsense for a good BBQ sandwich. The restaurant itself (on 30th st. just south of Fowler) is a "before renovation" picture, which i almost expect from a BBQ joint. No drinks--- just a vending machine--- which I accepted as funky proof of BBQ credibility. The 20+ minute wait didn't much conern me as long as long as the food was good.
Took to go containers back to work and got sodas. I tasted the beans first, an important test. They were right out of the can. Collards were fairly bitter with no deep flavor i come to expect from pork. The sandwich, with white bread already soggy--- was a severe disappointment. The pork, chopped into chunks, had no smoke flavor or aroma. The sauce was hot as promised, but nothing special and a little salty.
I cooked much better on the fly in my yard last Sunday with little effort. They opened in March, and I expect they'll go out of business before long. Woody's down the street would have been much better.
