Last week I posted a question regarding purchasing vanilla beans on e-bay. Well, my impulsive side got the better of me and I decided to bid on 10 Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans at the last few moments of one auction. I narrowed my choice down to one place auctioning beans that had good feedback, as well as quite a few repeat customers. As it turned out I was the only bidder, so the beans, including shipping and handling, only cost me about $.50 a bean. I placed my bid on Sunday and to my delight my package arrived Wednesday. My mailbox has never smelled so good! When I took them out of their package I discovered that they were about 7 inches long, moist and plump with seeds. They smelled just like the Madagascar beans I bought from Penzeys a couple of years ago. I made a simple cookie recipe using vanilla sugar that is prepared in advance of the making the cookies. I wont go into the details of the cookie as it is more appropriate for the home cooking board, but I do want to say the vanilla flavor was very good. I am used to justifying splurging here and there for the added enjoyment of eating, but I have found a new pleasure in discovering tasty bargains that enhance the enjoyment of eating as well. I will definitely buy vanilla beans again on e-bay and try the company that was recommended when I originally posted my query.
