I had a quick trip to Barcelona last week. 3 nights then bang, home again. Saturday night was at Igueldo. A modern take on Basque was what I was told. I had the Burgos morcilla with a chipotle paste on top. I thought the paste was eh and the morcilla was a bit restrained in the flavor. My main was the merluza (hake) w/clams. The merluza was grilled but I couldn't discern that. Kinda soulless. The big dog has used that phrase a lot when discussing places or foods. I've never used it before but this place made it pop up. Strange that on a Saturday night it was morgue like, too quiet. Total cost including 2 glasses of wine @ 3 euros each was 40.70 euros.

Sunday night was @ PUR. Again similar vibe, modern, quiet, dignified. Started was a mallorcan sobrasada w/honeycomb. Take the sausage spread it on toast and drizzle the honey. Tasty. But..when I asked what type of honey it was, they didn't know. Main was a grilled veal, Nice, good sauce as well. For dessert I had a glass of a chilled red dessert wine from Mataro, earthy yet sweet. A good meal, not great but good. Total 72 euros. Ouch.

Monday night diner was @ Gresca bar. Worth a detour. Sat at the bar, a bit more casual and not so restrained as the 2 other places. Starter was their lacquered eggplant, very tasty. Then I had a dish I hadn't had before, veal cheeks. Dense, tasty, a welcome newbie to my palate. Also had 2 glasses of cava, I think this one was about 45 euros.
