Maybe this place is uber-popular, but it was new to me...
I found myself in Astoria the other day and was really wishing I had this whole board synced up to my palm pilot when it came time to find a lunch spot. I had to wing it, though--but, happily, to much success.
In spite of the name, I stayed away from Kebabs because the small, family-run, Afghani place with the brick oven looked like it had a lot more to offer. I started with some dumplings, the name of which escape me. they were supposedly filled with lamb, but i found no lamb in them. they were great anyway--filled with scallions and potato and served in a spiced tomato sauce, as well as a yogurt sauce.
Next I ordered a side of a lamb and spinach dish. The lamb--shoulder i think--was slow cooked and gently spiced. the spinach was of the chopped frozen variety but i didn't bother me all that much because the rest of the dish was so well seasoned. Though the side dish doesn't normally come with rice, they brought me some anyway and it too was buttery and delicious. The service was very sweet and attentive overall.
If you haven't already, i say check this place out:
