After a long (6 year) absence from NYC, returned last week for a mere two nights.
Babbo: Went 6 years back when first opened. Food and menu virtually the same, great wine list (reasonable too). All food was superb, service friendly and efficient, sommelier excellent. Best part was having Neil Young's Decade cranked throughout dinner - bet that doesn't happen at Per Se!
Fat Cat: Last minute resos needed for large group, FC managed to have a table. Would not return. Food was unremarkable - too much stuff going on, and none of it particularly good. Had Bacon Tempura (bad idea) and some mediocre trout. Inedible sorbet. Terrible, grossly overpriced wine list. Listless service. Was this place called Chelsea Commons (Kitchen) back in 80's?
Other remarks: Can't believe Meatpacking district. Last time I was there, the only retail/food was Florent. Also, Soho is looking more and more like South Coast Plaza.
Papaya King and Ben's Pizza (Mcdougal @ third) were still solid.
