Babbo at the Bar: Part Two -- longish

So, like the guy in the movie "Diner", i've decided to work my way through the menu...

Tonight's dinner was not as stellar as last week's but it had its moments (both bad and good)...

Wine-wise, i stuck to red: i tried a Montalcino (lovely bouquet but like most Italian wines, to my palette, too acidic), and a Nebiolla: drinkable and soft and worked well w/ my secondi -- but at 17 dollars a glass (??) kind of a ripoff (and once again confirming that my personal inner sommelier does not look kindly on Italian wine -- any one of the many 10-18/bottle-retail French and California wines sitting in my house right now are far tastier to me than that Nebbiola)...

Antipasti: i started w/ the red beet and ricotta salad, and....i sent it back!...it tasted like a mushy lollipop...there was some vile creme fraiche-like substance too-artfully drizzled on the edges of the beet slices, the texture was like lumpy mashed potatoes, and the whole thing was dessert-sweet...a shockingly gross dish...

As a replacement, i got the much-hyped mozzarella and ramps...this was *okay*...anything would have tasted good after that vile beet salad, but it was a little underwhelming: some lovely creamy cheese and a few stringy-but-yes-tangy green onions (and a lot of toasted bread to make the dish look substantial)...decent but again, for 14 dollars, three small pieces of mozzarella and a couple shredded onions: eh...

the pork chop more or less redeemed the meal: i would have liked more of the artichokes that came w/ it...but it was a hefty, satisfying, perfectly cooked chop...and, the overall experience of the place was, as before, very pleasant...but had this been my first visit there and not my second, i probably wouldn't have rushed back...

As is, i'm still basking in the glow of the pancetta-wrapped porcini from my first visit, and hoping that i find more treasures as i work my way down the left side of the menu...
