for those who really wanna trek, i stopped into a place called Jalisto Tacos @ 214 St. Ann's Ave. (near 136th street?) in the Bronx. (one of my clients is a big factory located up there).
well, this place is a tiny hole-in-wall - but i looked into the little kitchen area in the back, and said "this looks real". Giant pots hanging from the ceiling, 2 chubby Mexican guys poring over the stove, Mexicans all sitting around socailizing - only 3 or 4 tiny tables, though. menu all in spanish.
unfortunately i don't eat meat, so i ordered the cheese enchiladas w/ no meat - $5.50 (meat is same price). a big pan filled with molé sauce, cilantro, freshly grated cheese burying the enchiladas. great tortillas underneath. the iceberg lettuce was a bit mundane, but otherwise this stuff was good.
I'm no mexican expert, but would be curious for anyone else to check this place out. they have an old jukebox from c. 1964 filled with traditional pop mexican singers from decades ago -
just added to the experience.
samples from the menu:
- tostadas de enchilada (spicy pork)
- tostadas de cabeza (head)
- tostadas de chorizo (mexican sausage)
- burritos de chicharron (pork skin)
- tacos de sesos (steamed beef brains!)
not refined food, obviously! check it out...
