Austin -- thanks for the tips and here's a report

We had a great few days in Austin and San Antonio and went to a few of the restaurants recommended by the Texas chowhounds. Every chow place was great -- and some of the ones we found by ourselves not so hot.

Anyway, thank you very much for your input -- you gave us some great meals!

Polvos. Yay!! It was exactly what we wanted. The chicken enchiladas with the Caliente salsa were fab. Loved the atmosphere. Never would have found it without you people. Thank you thank you thank you! We liked it so much we went back twice.

The Iron Works. Okay. Nice atmosphere. Found the brisket to be a bit dry. The ribs were okay. Liked the sausage and the beans. We thought it was pretty good until we discovered ...... Kreutz (sp?) in Lockhart. That place is SO worth the drive. They had what were probably the best ribs I've ever eaten. We didn't even bother with any sides. Just plain ol' meat. Mmmmmmm. I will remember that place for a long time.

Somebody recommended we go and see the bats. We did. They didn't come out in a big group but there were still plenty of them and they were neat to see. Thanks!

We were lucky enough to be in Austin for First Thursday in SoCo and that was a blast. Didn't eat at Guero's but enjoyed a Tecate and listening to a great live band. What a fun atmosphere! We walked around and snooped in the shops and stalls for hours. Ate at Magnolia's. Not very good. I swear my son's quesadillas were filled with Velveeta cheese!

Tried Amy's ice cream. It's good but a tad rich for us. Couldn't even finish a small bowl of the white chocolate or the Mexican vanilla. My son loved the crush-ins though!

We didn't eat much in San Antonio for some reason -- little bites and nibbles here and there so I can't really write about it. Booked at Boudros twice but cancelled both times coz we just weren't that hungry.

Liked the margs at the Westin. I've never had an olive with a marg before. I was a bit nonplussed but it was pretty tasty! Probably a major sacrilege.

Thank you again for your ideas. Your input really helped make our trip a success. I'll be thinking wistfully about those enchiladas and ribs for days.

Let me know if you ever need any info for Ottawa, Canada!
