I've tried a couple restaurants whih were recommended at the chowhound get-together:
Elsi's (Mexican on Burnet) a very bad begining with chips that reeked of rancid oil. I asked for fresh, and got another basket of the same. Then I saw a waiter go and get a huge sack of fresh chips and add them to the crisper, on top of the bad ones, hence the perpetuation of rancid oil smell, which must have come from the older chips heating in the bottom of the crisper. My domestic partner declared the rice to be under-cooked to the point of chipping his teeth, but it was in fact just old and dried-out. My enchiladas were delicious. The food was cheap. The atmosphere drab. I won't go back.
Sunflower (Vietnamese on Ohlen/183) truly delightful. We found plenty of vegetarian choices, including the 1st vegetarian imperial rolls I've seen in Texas. The sea bass and prawn dishes at the next table had me looking forward to going back with a group, perhaps of carivorous chowhounds. The place is too brightly lit, but otherwise pleasant.
