Food: 8/10 (I don't think it's fair to give it any more, as I only had a steak and a coffee)
Just got from a regular work trip to Auckland, and just wanted to report having an absolutely outstanding steak at The Foodstore in Auckland.
I was eating on my own, and usually avoid either touristy spots, or restaurants with a TV Chef (and their own show...) but it looked really nice, and modern, and had a buzzy open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant with a great looking chargrill, and so thought I would give it a try.
First things first, staff were very welcoming, and didn't give me the 'loser on his own' cold-shoulder, which was cool. I had a sirloin steak on a bed of mushrooms with onion rings on the side (NZ$34) and a carafe (no Aussie restaurants do a carafe, why is that? it's just a perfect glass and a half) of 2007 25 Steps Central Otago Pinot Noir (NZ$25) which was lovely - good fruit, cherries on the nose and pallet, and good depth of flavour - NZ Pinot is outstanding.
The sirloin was served on a rectangular dish on the the mushrooms, with 4 big crunchy golden brown onion rings. It wasn't a large portion, but exactly what I felt like, and simply one of the best steaks I have had, anywhere - little bit of char on the outside, perfectly pink on the inside (med-rare was ordered, and delivered).
Total Bill - $70NZ, which is medium pricey, but probably fair value for such good food
I had a quick coffee, and then a quick chat to Wylie Dean, the chef, who was very happy to chat, and seemed like a cool guy.
