Atlanta to New Jersey - report

Milt | Apr 20, 200404:16 PM

We have returned from our trip to New Jersey and have the following report. We did not eat out as much as expected. Three stops are worthy of mention.

On our way north, we stopped for lunch on a Monday on the north side of Richmond (Exit 81) and ate at the Ukrop's in the Brook Run Shopping Center. This is a grocery with a large deli attached. The deli was packed so we decided to try it. The staff was very helpful. There were a variety of stations and options. Prepared food, to be eaten elsewhere and/or later was available with considerable variety. There was also a good selection prepared to order. This is the option we chose. My wife chose grilled tuna steak ($5.49) which included one side item. I chose a shrimp scampi wrap ($5.79) with fresh fruit salad for my side item. We both felt my wrap was the better of the two. The tuna was fine, but it was just a tuna steak - nothing else. My wife said she would gladly return, but would order differently next time. Our ticket came to $14.27 including two fountain drinks. We went back after eating and bought a decadent package containing a delicious brownie.

On our return trip on Good Friday, we had lunch at the Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in New Carrollton, MD. The fish po boy and the fried shrimp were decent, but nothing to rave about. It was decent enough that I would be willing to eat there again.

Our evening meal on Good Friday was at River City Diner on the north side of Richmond (exit 84 Parham Rd) right by I-95 next door to the Holiday Inn. My wife had a Cobb Salad and I had a breakfast quesadilla. Both were good, neither was great. The atmosphere was the winner. The 50s and 60s decorations, with televisions showing commercials, film clips, etc. from that era was enjoyable. I remembered way too many of them.

Our other stops were quick and not worthy of note. Sonic, Cracker Barrell, two Hampton Inn continental breakfasts, and Krystals were all enjoyable for what they were.

Thank you for all of the input. It helped us plan the trip. Perhaps the next trip to New Jersey will have us in different locations at mealtimes and then we can try some more of the Chowhound recommendations.
