Astoria Mexican

vfj1 | Sep 11, 2002 02:29 PM

There doesn't seem to have been much interest in Astoria Mexican on this board. The neighborhood seems promising, particularly if one is willing to downplay the importance of food quality and concentrate instead on the lovely, leisurely, jukebox-assisted atmosphere that can turn a mediocre Mexican meal into a trip to the better half of all things.

Viva el Mariachi on Broadway, two or three blocks east of 31st Street, doesn't really offer that ambience. But I've been very pleased with the food there. Tamales verdes and rojas are all homeliness and tang, appealing to the authenticity-seeking thrill-seeking sensitive ethnic diner, and the appetizer nachos are fresh and complex enough to sent the frat-boy-in-all-of-us into a momentary trance for "pondering shit."
