Arizmendi Bakery in the Sunset is great

Arizmendi Bakery opened about a week ago on 9th Ave (between Judah and Irving) and I am quite a fan already. The prices there are cheap, but the stuff from their ovens are excellent.

The breads (type of bread rotates on a daily basis) are fantastic; I've had 5 or 6 types and they were all soft and airy with nice flavors. One time I had one of Chocolate Things and kept a smile on my face the rest of the afternoon. It was a bun consisting of fluffy white bread studded with larges chunks of good chocolate.

I've really enjoyed their pizzas. They have thin brittle crusts with really good fresh toppings that vary from day to day. These toppings are non-traditional but are delicious, with combinations that work pretty well. Yesterday I had one with goat cheese, corn, onion, garlic and sun dried tomatoes; the other day it was two kinds of cabbage, garlic, onion and goat cheese.

These guys are affiliated with the Cheeseboard in Berkeley, and I've been told that the pizzs et al are very similar to those at the Cheeseboard (haven't been there myself). Cheeseboard regulars should probably expect similar stuff at Arizmendi.

They're open from about 7:30am to 7pm, but it's better to go there early in the day when things are still fresh and gobble the stuff right away instead of waiting.
