Anna's Cafe near Brooklyn College

Anna's Cafe/Coffeeshop on Nostrand Ave. and Avenue I is by far the best thing going in the Brooklyn College neighborhood. The place looks just like a corner coffeeshop, but when you walk in and walk to the back, there's Anna with her four daily specials and fantastically prepared Italian vegetable sides. I have been eating there all semester (just got a job teaching at B.C.) and my opinion of the place has grown consistently.

First off, she makes an outstanding marinara sauce.

Eggplant parm, which is sometimes a special, but always available as a hero, is wonderful. Lightly breaded, great cheese, and that great sauce. It's better than the version I had at DiFara (only tried Dom's once).

Today I had an amazing pasta w/ vodka sauce - creamy, with just a slight vodka edge.

Have also had sole, spagh. w/ clam sauce, lentil soup, pasta w/ shrimp. All has been delicious (except the shrimp were frozen, not fresh). Everything comes with hot, homemade bread.

Vegetable sides include: zucchini (wonderful!), string beans (garlicky, great), carrots, broccoli, eggplant and tomatoes. I have yet to be disappointed by any of them.

The specials, which come with a side of veggies (or you can asked for "mixed") are usually $5.95 or $6.95. There are also many poultry and meat specials that I haven't tried (I hear they're great), and a full standard coffee shop menu (haven't tried that either). They're open till 8pm. If you're coming out to the college there really is no competition for this joint. Amazingly, the place is never overrun with Brooklyn College folk. Given the alternatives around here I would think it'd be swamped.
