I found a great place for excellent 'take-away' desserts. Anna Mia's is on 69th Street in Middle Village (on a corner on the right-hand side of the street if you're heading to the LIE from Metropolitan Avenue). The shop is only open to the public on Saturdays. The other days she's there preparing desserts for her retail customers.
She makes her cannoli shells on a pizzele iron (instead of deep frying them) and fills them with a smooth, delicious filling. If you're not serving them right away, she gives you the filling in a plastic piping bag so you can fill them yourself. She includes a little plastic cup of chopped pistachio nuts to garnish the ends. These were easily the best cannolis I've ever had.
Some of her other items are cupcakes, including "black and white" cupcakes frosted with ganache; cheesecake; scones; pecan squares; cookies; brownies; tiramisu..and much more.
All homemade and delicious. I served the cupcakes and cannolis to friends on Saturday night and everyone loved them.
A real find.
