Revisited one of my favorite lunch spots of almost two years ago: Ammo on Highland near Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. Went there two days ago and was pleased to see that it had evolved visually with some nice shrubbery enclosing a small patio area and the usual tight cozy crowd. The menu read as well as I'd remembered and food arriving at other tables looked very appetizing: a meatloaf with fluffy mashed potatoes, fresh asparagus; a brown rice dish with various vegetables, a chocolate dessert, etc. We ordered a couple of hamburgers that came with grilled onions, arugula and Gruyere cheese that looked great but tasted flavorless. They were overcooked and we sent one back and asked for salt and pepper. A glass of Chardonnay and an often refilled fresh lemonade brought the total to $38.00. Service was harried but it's the format and, as I mentioned, we never wanted for water or lemonade refills. The fries with the burger had flavor certainly but were soggy and greasy. It was a letdown and, frankly, for the money (and except for my guest's Chardonnay) I wish we had gone to In 'n Out up the street. Any other recent experiences?
