Upon Returning to Minneapolis from Los Angeles, I was rather dubious about finding good Mediterranian cuisine in the cities when I stumbled across the Black Sea. I had heard about the restaurant back in 2002, but had failed to try it until last weekend.

Do whatever it takes to visit this gem in St. Paul's Midway on Snelling Avenue across from Hamline University.
Ali Akilli and his wife run the restaurant, which only seats about 22 comfortably. The food is always made cooked to order and in plain view. It is clear that the restaurant is a labor of love for these two, and they go out of their way to provide excellent service and a dining experience rather than an excellent table turnover rate.
For appetizers, avoid the cabbage rolls and spinach pie and go with any of the Meze platters which are a fantastic deal at $3.95 a person. Portions are generous and the vegetables are always fresh and crisp.
For Entrees, I suggest any of the Kabob Platters (Chicken, Beef, Lamb, Meatball), the Black Sea Combination, or the delicious #32 Falafel Veggie Plate.
All of the entrees include delicious pita bread and your choice of rice or french fries. I was surprised that both sides are excellent...the fries were much much better than expected!
Oh, and what restaurant in the cities serves 12oz cans of pop/soda for $75 cold? Amazing...
