Relax. Portland Maine may be the wonderful frequently dubbed " Small City Foodie Capital" of New England
but from what I have tasted, they got NOTHIN' on our own World Champion Toscanini's. The two most well known "coulda' been contendah"s are Gorgeous Gelato and Gelato Fiasco. The former is owned by Italians (from Italy) apparently, and the latter is building an impressive empire of retail and mail order sales throughout the US. When I tasted it 2 years ago, Gorgeous really did not impress me at all; I found their flavors surprisingly artificial. And I finally made it today to the flagship Brunswick GF, excitedly sampling some 15 flavors (out of ~ 30 on tap)but finding only 2 that hooked me. Man, do these flavor names 'read well' but man do they disappoint. I'm guessing it's a combo of inferior ingredients and the creators' taste buds.
There are a plethora of stellar Portland bakery/patisseries to get you your daily sweeets quota, but skip the
ice cream up here. Hold out for the exceptional stuff back home!
