Amalfi eating

scarey | Jul 21, 2006 12:11 AM

I just returned from Amalfi and had some pretty mediocre meals unfortunately. BUT I did have a few great meals. Real yummy and not too expensive.
One place was a pizza place Donna Stella (Salita Rascica no 2, phone 338 3588483)
very good pizza first night we had Margherita which was excellent. blackened bubbly crust. Thin bottom crust, fork and knife pizza like all neopolitan style pizza seems t be. Light tomato sauce good quality cheese. they also have nice antipasto platter mixed and changes daily i guess since we actually ate there two nights in a row and it had different stuff both nights. eggplant parmesan, mozzarella with prosciutto, braised green beans, escarole wtih raisins, capers and olives one night and sausage the next night, a great rice ball that i couldn't figure out what was in it, but it was on there both nights. fried mini calzone with some veg inside. nice house wine standard but good. chilled red wine like we had everywhere. second night we had a white pizza which i didn't like as well. It had porcinis on it which for some reason i had convinced myself were having a summer season but of course they were jarred (not terrible but still, what was i thinking?).
The other place is called Antichi Sapori Degli Apostoli: it is to the left of the duomo, basically in the duomo. if you look to the left up the stairs you will see it.
Really good home cooking. one night we had shrimp with lemon, peel and eat yummy little shrimp, i didn't even peel them. Pork chops with roasted with vinegar and gnocchi with tomato sauce. the next meal was pasta with fresh anchovies and fish accqua pazza. It was all made with care and simple and just plain good.
we also ate at Il Mulino up the hill which lots of people liked, but i was unimpressed by.
