Went to the Aloha Fest today

I'm a sucker for all things Hawaiian, so my opinion is a bit tainted, but I thought it was great. I chose the mixed plate lunch that had the most components: kalua pig, rice, mac salad, poki, and lomi salmon (poi optional, so I declined) for $8. It was a big plate of food and the kalua pig, mac salad and poki were yum yum yummy! Rice was too mushy and wet, lomi salmon was watery and seriously lacking in salmon--I think I got the dredges on that one. The plate was lukewarm from sitting at the end of the assembly line, but I kind of expect that at a festival. Overall, quite tasty lunch for festival food.

My friends had a BBQ plate with Hawaiian style ribs, chicken, rice and crab-potato salad ($8) which they enjoyed very much. Ribs were excellent, chicken a little less so.

The music and all performances were wonderfully authentic, the random giveaways throughout the day were generous and fun: I won a fish and chips plate that I took to go and I'll have it for dinner later, and my friend won a $25 gift certificate to one of the vendor booths. Hint: ladies, bring your purse full of the usual preparations: wet naps, comb, lipstick, etc. and sit close to the stage. :-)
