al pastor quest temporarily hung up

Thi N. | May 12, 200408:05 PM

My quest for the perfect al pastor has temporarily stalled at Taqueria Sanchez, on Centinela below Washington.

The al pastor here, heavily sauced, is not the finest in the world - not the porkiest, or the most roast-crispy. But the combination of semi-porkiness and the deliriously marinated sauce is incredibly addictive. I mean, it's gotten under my skin. I mean, I think about it almost every day.

Also very good, pudding-y horchata.

Lomo and carne asada are good, but no match for various Eastside and East LA places. Carnitas is pretty decent. Chicarrones is soft and intense. Al pastor is, well, yeah...

Whenever I mention it to my girlfriend, she starts to quiver, and we end up going no matter what else we were planning to do.

Again, not gourmet paradise. But goddamn sweet.

(No match for the aesthetic wonder of pre-collapse Hollywood Antonijero Denise's, still.)
