Thanks for the tip, LazyMF, that Aji Ichiban opened in Houston. Do you know the location?
I happened to walk into the San Francisco branch of the store a few weeks ago. It's definitely worth checking out. It seems to be an Asian candy store, with a lot of plum-paste candies, gummy and sour candies, and dried fish snacks. At the SFO location you could try everything that was in bins. In fact, they had it sitting out in little dishes, welcoming customers to try.
The downside was that it wasn't all that tasty, and was more expensive than similar candies available in other shops. I don't know anything about this type of candy, and would guess that Aji Ichiban uses a higher quality of product, which may justify the expense, if you can tell the difference.
When I walked into the store I thought it was Japanese. The stafff told me it was, but that was about all the English they spoke. All the products, however, said made in Taiwan.
