Achiote - soooooo.. what?

Had some pollo asado pre-packaged from Trader Joe's last night (dinner for one). It was pretty tasty all in all so I was pleased and I noticed that it had that orange-ish glow to it like Tandoori chicken and I assumed it was due to achiote.

I don't use this when I make marinades at home but should I? What flavor does it add or is mostly just a coloring additive?
