ABC Seafood – Dim Sum Update

Melanie Wong | Sep 3, 2002 04:58 AM

The North team for the upcoming “civil war” (Ruth Lafler, Rochelle McCune and Derek Durst) continues to cut a wide swathe through the dim sum houses of San Francisco and San Mateo counties. ABC Seafood in Foster City was eliminated in a recent round of taste-offs. Yet, it still offers some good eating. The overall quality has improved dramatically, as reported here by others, since my last visit.

While ABC couldn’t hold its own on the “standard” dim sum offerings, we found two dishes that were special and well worth ordering. A plate of roast suckling pig was indeed from a young, tender and not very fatty piglet. The skin was well-browned, nicely bubbled, and firmly crunchy. The meat was succulent, very smooth and tender in texture, and almost sweet. The other dish was a shrimp-filled roll with a white deep-fried rice flour wrapper with an airy bubbly texture. This offered up a great textural contrast between the sweet and juicy shrimp and the crackly non-greasy exterior.
