ABC Cafe Bronx

david sprague | May 12, 2001 08:27 PM

Went on a shopping expedition to the ABC Carpet outlet in the South Bronx (Bronx River Ave @ Bruckner Blvd.) and feeling a little peckish, we found the in-store cafe.

Expecting little more than a hot dog and a soda--both of which are available--we were surprised to find a carefully assembled menu of soups, salads and all sorts of homemade goodies. Today's specials included chicken tacos, which looked luscious, cuban sandwiches (sold out by the time we arrived) and a Greek salad that looked to good to pass up. We didn't. The usual fixins were accompanied by bountiful yellow and orange peppers, a side of sweet, spicy three bean salad and--the piece de resistance--five or six thin slices of lovely grilled eggplant.

As fine a repast as i've ever had in a place like this, and, at seven bucks, a bargain. the proprietess, who makes the bulk of the items herself, was hauling fresh bread pudding out of the kitchen as we finished, but I was too stuffed to go on.
