7 fish dinner on Christmas Eve

Any other italians out ther that can tell me the reason why we cook 7 different fish for Christmas Eve dinner every year? Also curious to hear others menu's to possibly get ideas. I have the staples every year but like to switch up one or two of the fish to have something new. My staples are smelts, calamari, bacalla (salt cured cod), tuna over pasta, and shrimp.
