$655M and new regulations to strengthen meat industry competition

Melanie Wong | Jul 23, 202102:06 AM     3

" . . . The meat industry has long been dominated by a few big players, a system that has been exposed in the recent past both by pandemic-related shortages and the litany of investigations, lawsuits and prosecutions in many different sectors. This executive order is the beginning of the Biden administration's efforts to craft a potential industry fix.

According to the White House fact sheet about the executive order, four large meatpacking companies control more than 80% of the beef market. In the last five years, farmers’ share of the price of beef has dropped by more than a quarter — from 51.5% to 37.3% — while the price of beef has risen, the agency says, citing USDA data. . . "

Congratulations and thank you to the American Grassfed Association and independent ranchers such as Will Harris of White Oak Pastures and Greg Gunthrop, for persistent advocacy across three administrations to put the needs of rural Americans first. Here's the link to Gunthrop's facebook post with the back story that started in 2015. Especially heartening are his concluding words:
"One great thing to note is we've seen great bipartisan support of the executive order since Friday by at least three very right leaning farm organizations. I've said all along that a vibrant Rural America with opportunities for all is something that both sides of the aisle should want and work for. Local food and the family farm draws Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians to a common cause."
