A friend of mine and I periodically make trips to cities/areas just for food. We've done Chicago, Mexico City, Central Texas, and the Pacific Northwest so far. Next trip will be SF. We'll be making our trip this summer and will be planning it as much in advance as possible to fit food and fun in. So far, these are our dinner choices:
These are places we're pretty sure we want to do. Definitely Danko and French Laundry (yes, we will be basing our trip around actually getting reservations for both on the same 4 day weekend). We're probably going to need a 4th night place. So we'd like suggestions for that. We'd prefer a dinner place that's upscale, price is no concern, but where food is still the prime concern.
However, neither of us particularly like seafood. Both of us are okay with fish, usually (I don't like salmon or trout), he won't eat shellfish of any kind and I don't like crab. So a place focusing on seafood is not a good choice (I know, lots of you are shaking your heads in disbelief at avoiding seafood in SF).
We would also like lunch/snack suggestions. These can be much lower-brow places, even just a cart or shack. But I would like them to be somewhat unique, but still with the emphasis on good and interesting food. Some of our favorite "low-brow" cuisines: Mexican, Indian, and Thai.
My friend's also a major chocoholic, and we're both foodies (is that allowed at Chowhound) and would be interested in knowing some good gourmet food stores to hit to try cheeses, chocolates, breads, etc.
