The Dungeness Crab season kicked off today, December 1, in California for areas north of the Sonoma County line, and also in Oregon and Washington. The fleet began dropping pots two days earlier and will be landing their harvest today for sale. Other parts of the California coast remain closed due to whale entanglement risk. The next CDFW risk assessment is scheduled for on or before December 15 to determine expansion of the fishing grounds.

Crabbers negotiated a pretty good price with processors this year, $4.75 per pound to start the season. Unlike past years, the negotiations did not delay the start of crabbing.

As noted previously, retail prices will be on the high side due to excess demand following closure of the king crab season this year.

The first announcements I've seen are for Dungeness crab sourced from Fort Bragg and Eureka for sale in the North Bay. Good to see that the season is starting off at lower prices than last year's extraordinarily high levels.

Anna's Seafood in Petaluma is selling live for $9.75 per pound and cooked for $9.99 per pound starting tomorrow (Thursday) morning and through the week while supplies last.

Pacific Native Fisheries, based in Bodega Bay and Yurok-owned, is taking orders for Dungeness from Fort Bragg to be picked up or delivered in the North Bay or East Bay (Fairfield to Alameda) this weekend. $8.50 per pound for live and $9.50 per pound for cooked. Payment by cash or Venmo.

Marina Fresh Fish is charging $11.95/lb for live crabs (doesn't state the source) at farmers markets. List of Bay Area and Davis markets: https://www.missionfreshfish.com/markets

In Humboldt County, the F/V Oceana went out today and will be announcing a dockside sale soon in Eureka. Call or text 707-362-5054 for more information.

In McKinleyville, Ashley Seafood, 1548 Reasor Road, has crab tomorrow, 12/2, didn't state the price.

When you spot live local Dungeness crab at retail, please add the info to this thread to keep our community up to date.

Commercial crab season still delayed off most of California coast, including North Bay

Prime fishing grounds north of Sonoma County will open Dec. 1, but elsewhere is to remain closed until at least Dec. 15 due to whale density.
