2 Copper Colander questions

harrism | Jul 23, 201702:18 PM     4

I've got two questions about a copper colander I just picked up. First of all, does copper actually bring any benefit to a colander's work? There were three pieces on the thrift shelf. The other two were definitely going home with me, even though they are thinner than I'd have liked. I couldn't figure out why you'd need a colander to have amazing thermal characteristics, but at the price it was it seemed smarter to buy than to find out later. So I bought it and now ask: Copper for a Colander?

The second question is about what seems to me to be a design oddity. There are no holes in the bottom of the colander, so if you drain anything you'll end up with a small bowl of water at the bottom. The workaround is obvious--you just tip it to a side so that it drains, but I've never seen this before. Is there a reason for it, or is this "colander" something else that I've never heard of. I've included pictures so that you can see.

Enlighten me, please!
